The data blocks and their buffers could be allocated in a single operation,
using the beginning of a buffer to contain the data block and the rest of it to
contain the actual buffer.

This is a valid enhacement, it should be considered in the next round of
optimizations.

I don't have time to work in this back at any point in the foreseeable future.
I'm returning the bug to the main pool, if anybody wants to take it they are
welcomed to ask questions on how to approach the problem/enhancement.
